Hiya! I’m Kim and I’m a Computer Scientist in the Mathematics, Statistics, and Computer Science Department at St. Olaf College. I earned my M.S. in Applied and Computational Mathematics at the University of Minnesota - Duluth studying under Tracy Bibelnieks. I earned my bachelor degree in Applied Mathematics, and Statistics and Actuarial Science from University of Minnesota - Duluth.
Research Interests
My research area is machine learning, with a focus on the ethical and social dimensions of algorithmic systems. As machine learning continues to shape (or at least influence) decision-making in most aspects of the world that we live in, it’s critical to ensure these systems are fair, interpretable, and accountable. My work explores methods and practices that make machine learning accessible to all audiences.
Experience
I’ve worked in industry and government sectors prior to coming to academia. I am a huge proponent of data for good, and absolutely love chatting about my experiences and about the tech industry as a whole.
Personal Life
I’m originally from Rochester, Minnesota, best known for our giant corncob water tower (in reality it’s the Mayo Clinic but the water tower is iconic in it’s own right).
I will say “ope” when I bump into literally anything, and love getting lost in a really good fantasy series (always up for recs!). I have two very opinionated dogs, both named after hobbits (yes, they live up to the names), and I play way too much Magic: The Gathering.
I have always been interested in any form of artistic expression, and would have likely ended up as an art teacher if tech didn’t pan out. Recentely I have been enamored with pottery and printmaking, and love to go explore underrated museums (always open for recs here as well!)
